STL

Turn an STL file into a printable papercraft template.

Load the STL, set the finished size, unfold, print. Everything happens in your browser.

Key facts

Input
STL, binary or ASCII (also OBJ, 3MF, FBX, GLB, glTF, ZIP)
Output
PDF, SVG, DXF
Color
STL carries none, so sheets print as line work; use GLB, glTF or 3MF for printed color
Scale
Set a finished height, width or depth in mm or inches
Sheets
US Letter, A4, A3, Tabloid or custom
Best with
Low poly STLs, roughly a few thousand triangles
Files
Processed in your browser, not uploaded

How do I convert STL to papercraft?

Open the studio, drop in the STL, enter the finished size you want, press unfold, then export the sheets as PDF and print at 100%.

  1. Drop the .stl file into the studio. It is read and repaired locally.
  2. Type the finished height, width or depth. STL carries no units, so this step is what makes the print true to scale.
  3. Press unfold. Flat areas become single panels and seams land on sharp edges.
  4. Adjust if you like: cut or rejoin edges, move and rotate pieces, change tab width, re-pack the sheets.
  5. Export PDF for printing, SVG for a cutting machine, or DXF for CAD.

Will the paper model be the same size as the STL?

Yes, as long as your printer is set to 100% or actual size rather than fit-to-page.

Every sheet prints a ruler in millimeters, centimeters and inches. Measure it once after your first test page and you know the whole build is right.

What if the STL is too detailed?

Dense meshes are simplified automatically, and you can raise the minimum-detail setting to get fewer, larger pieces.

An STL exported for 3D printing can hold hundreds of thousands of triangles. That is unbuildable by hand, so reduce it first or let the studio simplify it. A model with a few thousand triangles prints as a template a person can actually cut, fold and glue.

What if the model is bigger than one sheet?

Pieces tile across as many sheets as needed, and oversized models are split into labeled sub-assemblies that rejoin with numbered seams.
